Current

Sunday, 20 May 2012 (in the dim light)
11:31am

Marta and I have walked down to Golden Gate Park, the end-point of Bay to Breakers. At least one photographer asked if I he could take my picture. Yeah, no.

5:30pm

Heading to the Goldies' (sans Marta, who is elsewhere) to watch the annualar solar eclipse through their sun-blindness-proof solar telescope. And the sky isn't even cloudy!

7:32pm

Wow. That was an amazing, nearly psyschedlic experience. Got pictures through Pete's telescope, as well as of my shadow (with the cresent of the eclipse particularly visible in the light through my soy-dog-holding hand, as well as making crescenty shapes along the edge of my shadow) and of the light throgh the trees. Then there was being able to take off my sunglasses for a while because it was getting sufficiently dark—not dark-dark, but the light was getting low enough that the usual eye-hurting glare was gone—and then having to put them back on shortly after the peak of the eclipse because, wouldn't you know it, the world started getting brighter again. Amazing. Yay science!

Now, between eclipse afterglow and Bay to Breakers and Maker Faire, at least a few people will show up for John Carpenter's Vampires at Bad Movie Night.

10:41pm

Not a great turnout, but everyone who did show up laughed at all our jokes—it was our easiest-to-please crowd in weeks. Despite the fact that I could have really used the money, that's still the next best thing to a full house.

Saturday, 19 May 2012 (but not yet official)
11:52pm

Spent the day working at Marta's place, and we spent the evening with c0g and m0, who were in town for c0g's birthday. We went out for Japanese food—turns out their favorite place in Japantown is also Osakaya, which made things convenient for all involved—and then to the Latin American Club for drinks. It was a crowded and noisy, but that's to be expected on a Saturday night, let alone a Saturday night before Bay to Breakers. c0g and m0 had hoped to find a hotel, but had no luck thanks to the aforementioned Bay to Breakers. And in spite of that and the frames of Marta's glasses breaking at the bar, it was a good night.

Friday, 18 May 2012 (the fully harshed mellow)
8:12am

Well, that place was rather horrible, and I still didn't meet the people I'd tried to meet at Pier 23 last week. Funny how that works.

Making it all extra-fun was the fact that nobody told the bouncers that the quote-VIP-unquote ticketholders (of which we were two) were supposed to be let in at seven o'clock, or that there even were quote-VIP-unquote ticketholders in the first place. It was a mess, and the bouncers were flaunting their power, which I suppose is what they're paid to do, but ick. Makes me miss the super-sweet bouncers at the old Power Exchange that much more.

9:34pm

What was going to be an evening spent getting caught up on our various shows at Marta's place has resulted in us out for a long walk due to a power failure. We explored new parts of Golden Gate Park and actually got exercise and stuff, so it was a net win.

Thursday, 17 May 2012 (if you know who to ask)
10:01am

Is there anything more banal than complaining to a neighbor about their dog's howling? Nope!

Seriously, though. My nerves were fucking show this morning, so much show that my hands were shaking. I think I was getting triggered, since I was starting to feel the frustration and desperation I felt when the giraffe was upstairs. My neighbors have been extremely contrite about the whole thing, saying they didn't realize that she howled every single day (which she does, incessantly), and that it might be worse right now because they have a guest staying over. In any event, they apolgize profuse and say they're going to look into howling control methods, so here's to hoping. For today, however, I've relocated to Marta's. I was needing a change of scenery anyway, though it's not a whole lot quieter here—her building's been repainted over the past few weeks, and the crew is now taking down the scaffolding, which means a lot of clanging and banging and men shouting in Spanish. Basically, nowhere is quiet today.

6:52pm

Marta and I just had an incredibly bland dinner at Cafe Mason, and are now heading up the street to Ruby Skye for the weekly's big best-of release party.

7:31pm

Oh, so this is Hell. Now I understand.

Wednesday, 16 May 2012 (to breathe and not die)
9:42am

In addition to my recaps of the second season premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic being up, the annual best-of issue is out, and I have plenty of stuff in that, too:
Best Place to Practice the Force: The Yoda fountain at the Letterman Digital Arts Center
Best Place to Relax While Feeling Like You're on an '80s Porn Set: The Hot Tubs
Best Public Restroom: New People, level 2F
Best Spooky Singalong: Caritas Gothic/Industrial Karaoke at the Cat Club
Best Weekly Film Screening That's Actually on Film: Oddball Film + Video
Best Homemade Kimchi: Park's Farmers Market 2
Best Food that Makes You Feel Like a Bold Foodie: STiNKY! Tofu at Spices!
Best Creator of Locally Sourced Furry Gear: bunnywarez.com
I'm especially proud of the bunnywarez.com one, since it's the only one with my name attached, both in the online and print edition, thus making it my first print byline in the weekly. And not my last, hopefully.

2:32pm

Whatever was wrong with the card yesterday has resolved itself, thank goodness.

Heading south soon to spend the evening with Ilene, who suffered a major parental loss this morning.

10:34pm

It was a good evening, overall. Had dinner with Ilene and her family generally hung out. I'm glad I could be there for her.

sometime after midnight

Oh, good heavens. I just lost my shit and emailed by neighbors about Janeway, who's been barking and howling like crazy this week—worse than usual, even for her—and is now making a huge ruckus overhead. This is just not okay.

Though it was fine yesterday, my EBT card didn't work today. That's not good.

Monday, 14 May 2012 (a modest kind of truth)
3:29pm

Meet on the Ledge is complete and presentable, so I've sent it off to the publisher. After the end of the semester, just like I'd told them!

12:38pm

Marta and I are doing some erranding in the Haight, and as always, I am so very glad I don't live here.

11:12pm

Pretty good turnout for Escape from L.A. at Bad Movie Night, and perhaps more importantly, the crowd was really into the movie in a good way, chanting snake! snake! snake! at the slightest provocation. People who have fun tend to be repeat customers.

Saturday, 12 May 2012 (this bloody tyrant time)
1:09pm

I love known that I can do the "hard-boozing writer" thing—I had half a beer last night, and I feel like I slept funny, though my body was probably dealing with the unexpected influx of gorgonzola sauce—so I'm happy to settle for "overly caffeinated writer." Not as fashionable or Bukowsi-glamorous, but we meet our deadlines.

Friday, 11 May 2012 (your painted counterfeit)
4:53pm

I've been working at Marta's, and I just got invited to join the weekly's staff for drinks at Pier 23, as a celebrationy thing for the upcoming best-of issue. Also, I've completed both my Libr 202 Final Exam (and am confident that I'll be getting 100%) and have turned in everything I need to turn in for Libr 204, so the semester is officially over, and that requires celebration as well. So, adventure!

7:51pm

Swell plan, except for the fact that I know don't know what anyone at the weekly actually looks like (except my editor, who I had dinner with in January) and thus I couldn't pick them out of the incredibly loud and noisy crowd, nor did they pick up on me wandering around with Marta trying to find them, both her and I feeling terribly out of place in the upscale crowd. So, after a half hour of that, we decided to had into North Beach for dinner, and are now having a more proper celebratory meal at Mona Lisa—which, oddly enough, is not particularly upscale.
